H accumulation at the interface of precipitates in Al alloy is considered to cause embrittlement. However, there is no quantitative knowledge regarding the interaction between H distribution and stress field near cracks. In this study, using a multi-modal three-dimensional image-based simulation combining the crystal plasticity finite element method and H diffusion analysis, we tried to capture the stress distribution near the crack, its influence on the H distribution, and the probability of crack initiation in the experimental condition. As a result, it was found that grain boundary cracks transition to quasi-cleavage cracks in the region where the cohesive energy of the semi-coherent interface of MgZn precipitates decreases due to H accumulation near the tip. We believe the present simulation method successfully bridges nanoscale delamination and macroscale brittle fracture.

The authors are carrying out conceptual design studies for a pool-type sodium-cooled fast reactor. There are main challenges such as measures against severe earthquake in Japan, thermal hydraulic in a reactor vessel (RV), a decay heat removal system design. When the JP-pool SFR of 650 MWe is installed in Japan, it shall be designed against the severe seismic conditions. Additionally, a newly three-dimensional seismic isolation system is under development.

In high-Cu bearing materials, Cu atoms were aggregated at the center of cluster surrounded by the Ni, Mn, and Si atoms like a core-shell structure. In low-Cu bearing materials, Ni, Mn, and Si atoms formed cluster and these solutes were not comprised core-shell structure in SCs. While the number of Cu atoms in clusters was decreased with decreasing nominal Cu content, the number of Si atoms had clearly increased. The cluster radius () and number density () decreased and increased, respectively, with increasing nominal Si content. The shift in the reference temperature for nil-ductility transition (RT) showed a good correlation with the square root of volume fraction () multiplied by r (). This suggested that the dislocation cutting through the particles mechanism dominates the precipitation hardening responsible for irradiation embrittlement. The negative relation between the nominal Si content and RT indicated that increasing of nominal Si content reduces the degree of embrittlement.

Here we outline a system for generating three dimensional models of urban and rural areas in Fukushima Prefecture. The Cs and Cs radioactivity distribution can be set flexibly across the different components of the model. The models incorporate realistic representations of local buildings, individual conifer and broadleaf trees, and the topography of the land surface. The system is demonstrated by modelling a suburban area 4 km from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant that has yet to be decontaminated. Air dose rates calculated in PHITS were correlated with measurements taken across the site in a car-borne survey.

To develop an analytical method for measuring the horizontal and vertical distributions of radiocesium on a wide scale, we obtained 253 -ray spectra using a NaI(Tl) scintillation detector at the bottom of 64 ponds in Fukushima during 2014-2016. The depth profile of sediment-associated radiocesium was found to be correlated with intensities of scattered and photo peaks. In parallel, core sediments were collected in same ponds to validate the estimates. Good agreement was observed between the results of in situ spectrometry and core sampling. These results indicated that our developed method would be a good approach for understanding the behavior of radiocesium and determining whether decontamination of reservoirs is required.

To improve the accuracy of simulations for air dose rates over fallout contaminated areas, the distribution of the radionuclides within the environment should be modelled realistically, e.g. considering differences in radioactivity levels between agricultural land, urban surfaces, and forest compartments. Moreover simulations should model the shielding of rays by buildings, trees and land topography. Here we outline a system for generating three dimensional models of urban and rural areas in Fukushima Prefecture. The Cs and Cs radioactivity distribution can be set flexibly across the different components of the model. The models incorporate realistic representations of local buildings, based on nine common Japanese designs, individual conifer and broadleaf trees, and the topography of the land surface. Models are generated from Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and Digital Surface Model (DSM) datasets, and refined by users assisted with ortho-photographs of target sites. Completed models are exported from the system in a format suitable for the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) for the calculation of air dose rates and other radiological quantities. The system is demonstrated by modelling a suburban area 4 km from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant that has yet to be decontaminated. Air dose rates calculated in PHITS were correlated with measurements taken across the site in a car-borne survey.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency promotes research and development of three-dimensional vibration simulation technologies for nuclear facilities. In this paper, we report a seismic response analysis of the Tohoku Pacific Coast Earthquake using three-dimensional models of the High-Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) building. We conducted a sensitivity study using input parameters with uncertainty. Furthermore, we examined the variation of the seismic response results against the input parameters.

Research and development of three-dimensional vibration simulation technologies for nuclear facilities have been promoted in the Center for Computational Science and e-Systems of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). A seismic intensity of upper 5 was observed in the area of High-Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) at the Oarai Research and Development Center of the JAEA during the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. In this paper, we report a parametric study of seismic response analyses of this earthquake using three-dimensional finite element models of the HTTR building with various uncertainty parameters (e.g. soil-structure interaction effects, soil properties). By examining the variation of the response result against the uncertainty parameters, we obtained a knowledge, which is essential for constructing a valid three-dimensional finite element model.

Radiation-induced bystander responses are defined as responses in cells that have not been directly targeted by radiation but are in the neighborhood of cells that have been directly exposed. In this study, we aim to clarify a role of bystander response to sustain the homeostasis of damaged tissue using heavy-ion microbeams. We established the heavy-ion microbeam irradiation method to a 3D cultured human epidermis. Using this method, a viable cell rate of the 3D cultured human epidermis irradiated with 260 MeV Ne-ion microbeams or broadbeams was analyzed by the MTT method.

The core management and operation code system aims to perform core management task efficiently by systematic management of data, analyses and edits, which are needed in the reactor core management and operation. The system consists of the five calculation modules: the reactor constant generation module, the neutronic-thermal calculation module, the radiation analysis module, the core structural integrity estimation module, and the core operation analysis module. In these modules, the neutronic-thermal calculation module is based on the dedicated three-dimensional diffusion and burn-up code HIZER. HIZER can execute core calculations easily for specific design specification and operation patterns of Monju, enabling efficient and accurate evaluation of the Monju core characteristics. This report describes its calculation method and validation results.

In this paper, the effect of phosphorous concentration in grain boundary (GB) on intergranular corrosion (IC) progress was studied to understand GB corrosion behavior of stainless steels in boiling nitric acid solution. Phosphorus (P) added extra high purity type 310 stainless alloy was corroded in boiling nitric acid solution, and P in GB was detected by three-dimensional atom probe. IC progress considering with P profile in GB was studied by numerical simulation using cellular automaton method. As the results, we concluded that P concentration change around 1.4at% in GB of the alloy caused IC rate change in boiling nitric acid solution. The developed numerical method could simulate GB corrosion change with P distribution in GB.

A duplex oxide scale was formed in lead bismuth eutectic at 450-500C, during 5500 h. Samples were located 500-700 nm away from the boundary between magnetite and Fe-Cr spinel layers, while the total oxide layer thickness is 18 m. It detected super enrichment of Cr with a size of ten nm roughly, as well as depletion of Fe and enrichment of O at the same site. Surrounding the Cr super enrichment area, enrichment of Si was newly noticed due to the scanned profile of detected atom counts. It is also confirmed that Pb and Bi concentration in the observed spinel region is almost null or less than 0.01 atomic percent, which is possible detecting lowest limit.

The plant was treated as a closed coolant system whose pressure ranges to the atmospheric pressure. To simulate an entire plant, it was found necessary to have the moisture separator model and to account for reversible pressure drops at a junction with an area change. A spatial kinetics model without a notion of reactivity was applied. It was confirmed that THYDE-NEU can perform a coupled neutronic and thermal-hydraulic null transient at the hot full power. Among factors influencing spatial kinetics in the turbine trip were the temporal behavior of the bypass valve opening, the thermal non-equilibrium model and the manner in which to express the coolant density used in the table look-up of cross sections. By adjusting these factors, it was found possible to generate the scram signal when the core averaged LPRM output reached the prescribed value. The other calculated results also were found satisfactorily in agreement with the experimental results.
